Welcome
New Era — New Urgency: The Case for Repurposing Education explores the unprecedented realities and educational challenges associated with entering a new era, such as catastrophic climate change, advanced artificial intelligence, massive demographic shifts, and worldwide digital disinformation campaigns.
This era calls for a new urgency in thinking about how we will educate present and future generations of young people.
Authors Merlino and Pomeroy draw on their collective 80 years educational experience including 12 years leading a massive educational reform project in Egypt. They lay out a roadmap for how we can transform education in the United States to prepare students for this new era.

REVIEWS
"Exceptionally well written, organized, and presented, New Era - New Urgency is especially and unreservedly recommended for personal, professional, community, governmental, and college/university library Contemporary Educational Theory & Practice collections and supplemental curriculum studies lists."
JAMES COX. Editor-in-Chief, Midwest Book Review
“Educators, and the public would do well to understand and work to implement a new purpose-driven education described by the authors in New Era-New Purpose. What they describe here is not theoretical, they have developed and ‘test-driven’ this new vision for education in schools with students and teachers. An important contribution of this book is to understand more fully the changing purposes of American education in a nation lurching, painfully at times, toward “a more perfect union.”
CHARLES COBLE, PhD. Former Dean of the School of Education, East Carolina University, and the former Vice President for the 17-campus University of North Carolina System
“This is an incredible book that shares the important work of transforming school systems to empower students with critical thinking. I learned a great deal about history, culture, and educational change.”
JO BOALER, PdD. Nomellini & Olivier Professor of Education (Mathematics), Stanford University and a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in Great Britain
"This book makes a compelling case for changes that need to be made in America’s education system and is a must read for education professionals who wish to eschew traditional methods of teaching that continue to pervade American schools.”
PRESTON FEDEN, PdD. Professor Emeritus Department of Education, La Salle University
""New Era – New Urgency is a read that not only belongs on the bookshelves of every reforming educator, but one that presents ideas that set the bar significantly high to incite and direct future outcomes for needed change.”
GARY A. LAURSEN, PhD. Director & President, High Latitude Mycological Research Institute Affiliate Professor of Biology, Universities of Alaska and of Montana

"One of the book’s greatest strengths is its balance of rigorous research, historical analysis, and actionable solutions. Merlino and Pomeroy critique the systemic barriers to progress while maintaining an optimistic outlook on the possibilities for transformation. Their use of case studies—from tech-driven schools to those embracing project-based and competency-driven learning—effectively bridges theory and practice, offering tangible models for educators to consider. Particularly noteworthy is the emphasis on systemic equity, ensuring that the proposed educational transformation prioritizes historically underserved learners and communities."
